Shchyrets Reservoir to Receive New Status for Protection Against Development
The Shchyrets Reservoir is set to receive the status of a regional landscape park. Its approximate area will cover 164 hectares.
According to Lubomyr Zubach, the deputy mayor for urban development, the relevant procedure has already been initiated by the Lviv City Council’s ecology department.
This environmental protection status will safeguard the area from potential residential development. However, it will not prohibit recreational use. Known locally as the Navariyskyi Lake, the Shchyrets Reservoir will continue to serve as a zone for recreation and sports rowing, emphasized Lubomyr Zubach. Our main goal is the revitalization and improvement of the condition of this water body.
Geoecological Research and Issues of the Reservoir
There are already geoecological research results conducted by scientists commissioned by ‘Lvivteploenergo’. These were recently presented at a working group meeting. Notably, administratively, this reservoir is located in the Pustomyty community area, but the land is used by ‘Lvivteploenergo’.
The current condition of this reservoir requires comprehensive approaches. This involves siltation and pollution of the Malechkiv and Shchyrka rivers that flow into the reservoir, the ponds dug by people along the river channels, and the lack of sewage systems in the surrounding settlements. All these factors affect the water quality in the reservoir itself.
