Lviv has started to crack down on outdoor advertising on a massive scale

Lviv tidies up signage: more than two hundred structures dismantled

In July-August, 221 advertising structures were dismantled in the city. The entrepreneurs either installed them illegally or the signs did not meet the requirements approved by the city.

“A sign or advertisement is an important element of the urban environment. But it should not create visual chaos and light noise. It should be clear, concise and aesthetically pleasing, harmoniously fitting into the overall architectural style of the city,” says Taras Kubai, Director of the Department of Natural Resources, Construction and Community Development. “When there is too much light and it flickers in different colours, it distorts the appearance of the city, especially when it comes to the city centre, which is a UNESCO heritage site. That is why we ask entrepreneurs to dim the lights in their shop windows and not to turn the city into a multi-coloured Shanghai.”

Since the beginning of the year, 648 advertising structures have been dismantled in the community. Among the most frequent violations are inconsistencies in shape, size and colour, shop windows covered with advertising images, etc. In particular, there are many comments on the lighting design of signs.

At the same time, 981 applications for the installation of advertising structures were considered this year.

“This shows that most entrepreneurs already know that before placing a sign, it needs to be approved by the Lviv City Council,” says the Administrative and Technical Department, which oversees the process of installing signs in the Lviv community.

Therefore, if you have any questions about the appearance of the sign, you can always consult the design department of the enterprise.

The city of Lviv started to regulate advertising signs back in 2016. And Lviv became the first city to adopt a procedure for the placement of small architectural forms (signs). And for entrepreneurs, special applications have been developed that set out the basic rules for signage design.

Currently, the Department of Natural Resources, Construction and Community Development, together with the Department of Historic Environment Protection and the Department of Architecture and Spatial Development, are working on updating the requirements for signage in the Lviv City Territorial Community. An inventory of the structures has already been carried out – more than 12,000 signs have been added to the register.
