Local History Atlas to be published in Lviv

Local History Atlas to be published in Lviv to promote historical monuments of neighboring communities

The Local History Atlas of the Lviv Agglomeration, which is being developed as part of a Council of Europe grant, should showcase the tourist attractions of the communities that make up the agglomeration. This was announced at a meeting of the Lviv Agglomeration Association of Local Governments.

“The Lviv agglomeration includes more than 300 villages, and each of them has its own specialty. A special cross or a chapel, some recreational opportunities, and we want to put their photos and descriptions in one book. This Atlas will be presented in printed and electronic versions so that residents can get to know their land better. Our children are studying the history of Ukraine, and we want them to know the history of their own region, where they live,” said Roman Kizyma, Executive Director of the Association of Local Governments “Lviv Agglomeration”, during today’s meeting at the City Hall.

Also at the meeting, which was attended by the heads of the Bibrska, Horodotska, Pustomytivska, Davydivska, Zhovtanetska, Velykolyubinska, Kulykivska and Zhovkivska communities, they agreed to hold the First Ukrainian Agglomeration Forum in Lviv, which will invite international partners and representatives of potential agglomerations to share experiences and cooperate. The event will be held in October. At the same time, they plan to hold the Agglomeration Days, during which they will organize a fair of crafts and products from the communities that make up the Lviv Agglomeration.

In addition, Oleh Volskyi, head of the Zhovkva ATC, brought to the meeting of the Lviv Agglomeration Association of Local Governments the famous Zhovkva watermelon from the farm of two brothers, one of whom is a veteran who defended Ukraine in the hottest spots of the frontline. Since last Saturday, these watermelons, grown near Lviv, have been available for sale every week at the Farmers’ Market on Rynok Square.

As part of the cooperation, summer camps for schoolchildren are currently underway in the Lviv agglomeration so that children can get to know their native land better, explore the history and nature of the region, and visit various craft industries that may inspire them to choose a profession in the future.

The first trip took place two weeks ago. Since then, about 300 children have already gone to the one-day camps. By the end of the summer, more than 200 more schoolchildren will go to explore neighboring communities.

As a reminder, the communities signed the Memorandum on the establishment of the Lviv Agglomeration Association in Lviv on November 29, 2023. The Association has become a platform that unites communities to implement joint projects on a mutually beneficial and equal basis. It also provides an opportunity to attract funds from European donors for these projects.
