An architectural competition for the Memorial Complex of Military Burials of Heroes of Ukraine was announced in Lviv

In Lviv, an All-Ukrainian open architectural competition was announced for the best proposal for the memorial complex of military burials of Heroes of Ukraine on the street. I. Mechnikov in Lviv. Proposals are expected from the participants of the competition, which can become models of a new approach to the design of military cemeteries in Ukraine. Architects can register to participate in the competition until January 21.

According to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovoy, the issue of the development of the memorial space was raised by the families of our Heroes and the city community.

“If you come to the memorial complex, there are people there every day, from morning to evening. Therefore, this place should inspire. And I would very much like this architectural complex to become an example for other communities. Therefore, it is important that information about this competition is available to everyone.

We expect that at the competition we will receive a large number of projects and choose the best one. Why is this important? Because this is our history, and it is a great pain and a great suffering of people. This memory is important to us. Our children and grandchildren should remember and know this history. Memorial complexes provide such an opportunity,” said Andriy Sadovy.

The terms and program of the architectural competition were adopted by the executive committee of the Lviv City Council today and are already available on the website of the Lviv City Council. They were developed together with a working group, which includes many professionals: historians, representatives of artistic circles, cultural figures of Lviv.

“We want to see proposals on how military burials should look like, burials of our Ukrainian Heroes. We want to see an inclusive space, because many brothers will visit the complex in wheelchairs. We want to see an area for days of remembrance. Closer to Mechnikov Street, there can be quite large gatherings and commemorations of Heroes. It should be, on the one hand, a comfortable space in terms of accessibility and stay, and on the other hand, it should carry this memorial function, it should be significant. It should also be a certain space of the memorial square, where historical events, the Russian-Ukrainian war, during which the Ukrainian heroes who are buried on Mechnikova Street gave their lives, will be emphasized in a landscape form,” said Anton Kolomeytsev.

You can register for the competition until 5:00 p.m. 21.01.2024. And submit the project – until 5:00 p.m. 18.03.2024. The winners of the competition will be determined in April.

Prizes will be paid to the winners. 1st place – 500 thousand UAH, 2nd place – 300 thousand UAH, and 3rd place – 200 thousand UAH. It is important that the financing of the competition and the payment of prizes to the winners will not be carried out at the expense of the city budget, but exclusively at the expense of benefactors.
