Traffic lights at important intersections in Lviv continue to be equipped with autonomous power supply.
Today, an uninterruptible power supply was installed at one of the most difficult intersections: Naukova Street – Trolleybusna Street. So from now on, in the event of a power outage, traffic lights at this location will be able to operate for up to 10 hours. This was reported by Mykola Vlasiuk, head of Lvivavtodor.
He noted that traffic lights are primarily installed at intersections with the highest concentration of accidents, in accordance with requests from the patrol police, to ensure the safe movement of all road users. The second priority is requests from carriers. After all, in order to comply with traffic schedules, it is important that public transport crosses a particular intersection as quickly as possible. The city can also make such a decision.
“The intersection at Naukova-Troleibusna streets is very complicated, with several lanes of traffic intersecting, 5 regulated pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes, etc. Last year, there were 4 major accidents at this location, including fatalities. Leaving it unregulated means endangering all road users. Even if you involve traffic controllers, you need a whole team to organize the traffic. That’s why this and similar intersections are prioritized for equipping them with autonomous power supplies,” said Mykola Vlasiuk.
As of today, uninterruptible power supplies in Lviv provide autonomous operation of 16 traffic lights. In addition, traffic lights are backed up in other ways – from generators and voltage inverters shared by concerned residents, businesses, and utilities. Thanks to this cooperation, another 28 traffic lights can operate in the event of a power outage.
“Out of 170 traffic light facilities operated by our company, a total of 44 facilities have been provided with backup power. We are now receiving new uninterruptible power supplies and plan to equip another 24 traffic light facilities with autonomous power by mid-September.
We took a responsible approach to the choice of this equipment. We studied the experience of other cities and tested various samples. The units we buy from the Kyiv manufacturer contain the most necessary “stuffing” for us, are of high quality and durable. In particular, the battery in this power supply can last up to 8-10 years, and all equipment is of high quality and certified. The case of the “cabinet” is anti-vandal, there is a heating and ventilation system, an alarm system and a monitoring system,” said Mykola Vlasiuk.
