Trolleybuses capable of covering 20 km without a contact network are now running in Lviv.
Lviv continues to modernise its public transport, and now trolleybuses equipped with an autonomous power supply system are running on routes 22 and 33. According to Lvivelectrotrans, the city currently has three such trolleybuses that have passed certification and state technical inspection.
Advantages of the new trolleybuses
Thanks to the batteries, these trolleybuses can travel up to 20 km without being connected to the overhead line. According to LKP, this solves several important problems:
- Transport does not stop in case of damage to the contact network or accidents.
- During power outages, trolleybuses complete their journeys without causing traffic jams.
- The development of routes is possible without the construction of additional infrastructure.
Development prospects
As part of the project “Modernisation of Lviv Public Trolleybus Transport”, funded with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, it is planned to re-equip 8 more trolleybuses. All 11 vehicles will serve one of the routes that will be extended without the need to complete the contact network.
Production and financing
All work on equipping trolleybuses with batteries is carried out by Electrontrans. The test model of the trolleybus was converted a few years ago, and new vehicles are being completed as part of this project.
