“Climatic” trees will be planted in the center of Lviv

This year, “climatic” trees will be planted in the central part of Lviv. The relevant decision was approved today by the executive committee of the city council. Approximately 260-280 green spaces will appear in those locations where they were not there before. In particular, on Svoboda and Shevchenko avenues, Shukhevych, Kopernyk, Vynnychenko, Horodotskaya, and Franka streets. The first trees are planned to be planted by mid-April.

As Oleksandra Sladkova, head of the ecology department of the LMR, explains, the so-called “climatic” trees are distinguished by the fact that they better tolerate drought, frost, extreme weather conditions and are more adapted to excessive air pollution and gassing. “Climatic” trees include, in particular, ornamental pear, various types of maples, some types of ash trees, robinia, sakura, etc.

“We have a problem with overheating of the central part of the city. Due to dense buildings and a large amount of traffic, the air here is heavy. There are streets where there is no shade at all. To improve this situation, we decided to additionally green the streets that have enough space, but do not have trees. We will plant them with so-called “climatic” trees. They are distinguished by great endurance even in the context of climate change,” said Oleksandra Sladkova.

For example, on the street I. Franko wants to plant robinia (acacia). “These trees are extremely hardy. And this street is narrow. Therefore, such decorative trees will be appropriate here,” said Oleksandra Sladkova.

On Ave. Decorative ash trees are planned to be planted in Shevchenko. On Ave. Svobody – to plant sycamores in those locations where there are no trees. On the street Horodotskyi – to intersperse different species of maple. And on the street Shukhevicha, near the “Budokan” school, – lay a sakura alley. “There were never trees here, but that doesn’t mean it should always be like that,” Oleksandra Sladkova noted.

As the official added, 200 saplings will be purchased with budget funds. About 60-80 more saplings – at the expense of sponsors. All trees are planned to be planted in the spring.

Public organization “Plato” will be involved in the greening process as the initiator of planting “climatic” trees.
