They want to develop bicycle traffic in Lviv and its surroundings

The second meeting of the working group on the prospects of the project “Development of bicycle traffic in the Lviv agglomeration” was held in Lviv OVA, during which the priority areas of infrastructure development in the agglomeration were determined.

The discussion was attended by representatives of structural subdivisions of the Lviv OVA, the Service for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure in the Lviv Region, local self-government bodies, cyclist associations, consultants of the Council of Europe, as well as experts who are involved in the development of the network of tourist routes, including bicycle routes.

The expert of the Council of Europe Ihor Mohyla familiarized the audience with the types of bicycle infrastructure, the requirements for the development of the bicycle network and regulatory documents for the development of bicycle traffic.

“Cycling infrastructure must be integrated into the general transport network and provide the possibility of combining different types of movement. First of all, for getting around in the direction of Lviv, which will at the same time make it possible to make local trips, as well as improve the conditions of bicycle tourism in the Lviv region,” said Ihor Mohyla.

The working group determined the forms of bicycle traffic on the streets of settlements, on public highways and separate bicycle lanes outside highways.

“The development of cycling infrastructure in the agglomeration will increase the tourist potential not only of communities around Lviv, but also of the entire region. Local residents will be able to use these paths, getting to work in neighboring settlements or to Lviv, as well as tourists, as the bicycle traffic will be organized in such a way as to cover potential tourist locations,” said the acting director. Head of the Department of Tourism and Resorts, Taras Lozynskyi.

Among more than 10 proposed routes, 5 priority directions were identified, taking into account the interest of communities and the desire and possibility of their implementation in the future:

Lviv – Kulykiv – Zhovkva;
Lviv – Horodok;
Lviv – Davydiv – Stare Selo;
Lviv – Pustomyty;
Lviv – Solonka.

Before the next meeting, the working group aims to develop specific projects of bicycle infrastructure taking into account the State Building Regulations (SBN), the State Standards of Ukraine (DSTU) and carry out an analysis of complex sections of the bicycle infrastructure connection in order to form the final projects that will be included in the Lviv Agglomeration Strategy.
