For a long time, the little patient of the hospital has been struggling with a serious illness – bilateral nephroblastoma.<\/p>\n
The four-year-old girl has already undergone 12 weeks of pre-operative and 25 weeks of post-operative chemotherapy. Doctors hope that after a few remaining therapies, they will be able to confidently say that Maria is in the long-awaited remission.<\/p>\n
The girl was diagnosed with bilateral kidney damage in August last year. The mother said that her daughter first lost her appetite, then vomiting appeared and the temperature rose. So, first they were treated for poisoning, then they suspected a worm infestation. But the results of the ultrasound and CT examination revealed large tumors on both kidneys.<\/p>\n
“When we started the treatment, the removal of one kidney and the resection of the formations in the other were considered. But after chemotherapy, it was possible to save both kidneys,” said the girl’s doctor, Acting head of the Children’s Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Clinic, Khrystyna Zapochna.<\/p>\n
The head of the surgical department, Bohdan Romanyshyn, said that in most cases, the kidney has to be removed together with the tumor.<\/p>\n
“However, Maria’s preoperative treatment by oncologists gave a very good result. The tumors in both kidneys decreased, so we decided on an organ-preserving operation with partial resection – 45% of one of the affected kidneys was removed from the patient. Now both kidneys are functioning well, and the child does not need dialysis,” the surgeon said.<\/p>\n
