Little Davydko and Kyrylko are celebrating a holiday, as they are being discharged after a successful bone marrow transplant at the Children’s Medicine Centre of the Western Ukrainian Specialised Hospital.<\/p>\n
They spent the last month with their mothers in separate boxes recovering from the stem cell transplant.<\/p>\n
This is the second bone marrow transplant for three-year-old Davydko from Volyn.<\/p>\n
Such tandem transplants are carried out in foreign centres to improve the outcome of treatment, explains Nelya Vovk, an oncologist at the Centre.<\/p>\n
“Our doctors performed Davydka’s first transplant a few months ago. The boy had a lot of complications, including central venous access, but thanks to the coordinated work of paediatric surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists, all these difficulties were overcome<\/p>\n
We have all the means and capabilities not only for bone marrow transplants for children, but also for comprehensive treatment of cancer patients by related specialists,” the specialist adds.<\/p>\n
Five-year-old Kyrylko from Stryi has also undergone many trials during his treatment: surgery, chemotherapy and, finally, a bone marrow transplant. His brother and extended family are eagerly waiting for him at home.<\/p>\n
“It’s too early to talk about the completion of treatment, as there is still one more transplant to be performed. However, we believe that our joint efforts have overcome all the obstacles to recovery,” the doctors are convinced.<\/p>\n
In total, this is the 16th bone marrow transplant at the Clinic of Paediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation. And several more young patients are waiting for a stem cell transplant – doctors are now preparing them for the responsible procedure.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
