Residents of the region joined the “Let’s Light a Candle of Memory” campaign and honoured the memory of millions of Ukrainians who were killed by the Soviet Union through hunger and repression.<\/h2>\n

Today, on 23 November, a nationwide minute of silence and an ecumenical memorial service for the victims of the famines of 1921-1922, 1932-1933, and 1946-1947 in Ukraine were held on the square near the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Lviv.<\/p>\n

Representatives of the authorities, the public, clergy and concerned Lviv residents joined the “Lets Light a Candle of Memory” campaign to light candles in memory of the people who were brutally murdered by the Soviet government.<\/p>\n

“The Ukrainian people went through terrible years when millions died because of the famine created not by nature but by the hands of the Soviet regime. But we were not broken. The nation survived. Today, Russia, the heir to the same empire, is trying to destroy us again. But we are different: free, united and fighting for our future. I urge everyone, wherever you are, to light a candle today in memory of the victims of all the famines in Ukraine. Remember all Ukrainians who were killed by the cruel and cynical Russia. We will never forget!” said Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
