This year, I had a good opportunity to visit places connected with the Battle of Brody of 1944 together with my children.<\/h2>\n

The day turned out to be quite hot. The same weather prevailed 68 years ago. Our first stop was at Ozhydiv station. Local residents assured us that the station building had been preserved since the war. It was here that the \u201cGalicia\u201d Rifle Division arrived from Germany at that time.<\/p>\n

The unloading was led by the division commander, General Freitag. Suddenly, Soviet aircraft flew in and began spraying our train with machine-gun fire. Our \u201cheroic\u201d commander vanished as if blown away by the wind (he would betray us more than once).<\/p>\n

We, the anti-aircraft gunners, did not have such a choice. After unloading, we were given several days of rest, and we were able to celebrate the feast of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, which especially pleased my fellow countrymen from Sokal. However, the rest did not last long, because an order came to prepare the second line of defense, which, unfortunately, became the first after the desertion of demoralized Wehrmacht soldiers.<\/p>\n

\u2026Next, our route led to the village of Yaseniv, specifically to Mount Zhb\u00fdr, where a monument to the Ukrainian \u201cGalicia\u201d Division has been erected. At the foot of the hill there is an information board with the history of the division\u2026 84,000 volunteers registered for it; 54,000 passed the medical and anthropometric examination (height of at least 170 cm!), but the Germans allowed the division to be formed from only 13,000 people.<\/p>\n

A rather steep path leads to the top of the hill. I am pleased to note that I cover the nearly 100-meter route without much effort. There is still life in the old dog yet! At the top of the hill, we meet village head Bohdan Hlushchak and local residents, who are tidying the area around the monument. We place a bouquet of bright wildflowers at the symbolic column with the division\u2019s emblem.<\/p>\n

Nearby, on the ground, a fragment of the old monument has been preserved; Russian paratroopers tried to destroy it in 1990. The enemies fought against the division even decades later! In vain \u2014 the monument was restored. Now forever.<\/p>\n

Our next stop was Olesko Castle. Today, it is a tourist Mecca of Galicia with all the typical features: restaurants, souvenirs, costumed Cossacks and nobles, pony rides\u2026 In July 1944, the castle was a stronghold that was defended the longest. The guide speaks enthusiastically about the history of the castle. Tourists are especially interested in the famous battle painting \u201cThe Battle of Vienna,\u201d for which the ceiling was even raised.<\/p>\n

And I recalled that it was in this very room that there was an operating room, where matters of life and death were decided for many of my comrades. We go down into the castle cellars. In July 1944, they were overcrowded with the dead and wounded. Bloodied bodies, dying soldiers, some with amputated arms or legs\u2026<\/p>\n

The memories made me feel faint, and I could no longer remain in those cellars. We go out onto the castle ramparts. What beauty opens before us! What a wonderful Ukrainian land we have! We leave the castle along a road paved with old brick. I recalled how a Red Army tank once tried to approach the castle along it at close range in order to deliver a devastating blow to the Galician stronghold, but in those days the Stalinist armored vehicle could not overcome the many-meter-thick walls of Olesko Castle. I thought it would be good to install at least a modest memorial plaque in memory of the events of 68 years ago, in memory of our fallen boys.<\/p>\n

\u2026And the road again. On the southern side, a low mountain ridge covered with forest is visible. During the days of fighting, it was a desired place for many of us. The forest offered shelter from bullets, explosions, and shrapnel. That was where one had to run, walk, or crawl, while carrying heavy machine guns, Panzerfausts, anti-aircraft guns, and heavy artillery. Many failed to reach that longed-for forest edge\u2026 We drive toward the village of Pidhirtsi. On the way, we stop near a common grave of division soldiers and UPA fighters. I recalled how we shared weapons and ammunition with the \u201cboys from the forest.\u201d Many division soldiers joined the ranks of the UPA after the Battle of Brody. In Pidhirtsi, the local castle-palace impresses with its beauty. Although full restoration is still far away, one understands why the late Borys Voznytsky loved Pidhirtsi Castle so much. A true work of architectural art, a wonderful monument to the talent of our people! During the Battle of Brody, heavy fighting also took place in this village. The majestic church near the castle still bears bullet marks.<\/p>\n

And here is Zolochiv. On the way, we stop by the Strutyn distillery, where I had to work after the war. It is sparsely populated here.<\/p>\n

The alcohol production line has been stopped. Other facilities are used for the production of mineral water. New times \u2014 new needs, new problems\u2026<\/p>\n

At the end of the journey, we go to the area of our breakout from the Brody pocket near the villages of Pochapy, Kniazhe, and Chervone. Perhaps the largest number of my comrades died here. Near the Lviv\u2013Ternopil highway is a military cemetery-memorial for the division soldiers and their German allies in that battle. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of modest military crosses. On each of them there is a small trident (for Ukrainians) or a cross (for Germans), a blue-and-yellow ribbon, and information about the soldier. Historians carried out rather meticulous archival work. Near the cemetery chapel, we pray for the souls of those killed in that terrible battle. I read the inscriptions\u2026 Here is the cross over one of the division\u2019s ideologists, former adjutant of General Tarnavsky, Dmytro Paliiv. On some crosses there is a modest inscription: \u201cUnknown soldier of the \u2018Galicia\u2019 Division.\u201d And then, a poignant \u201cmeeting\u201d after 68 years\u2026 Ivan Zvarych serviced heavy artillery guarded by our anti-aircraft gun. He made it home to the village of Kniazhe, but was shot by the Bolsheviks in his own yard before the eyes of his wife and children.<\/p>\n

Filled with emotions and memories, we return home. Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in battles for their native land! Glory to Ukraine!<\/p>\n
