Doctors used a modified method of intervention to correct chest deformity in a 16-year-old teenager from Lviv Oblast

The new technique was the best fit for the reconstructive surgery of 16-year-old Ostap from the Lviv region.

The boy has a complex type of chest deformation with funnel-shaped and keel-shaped areas. So, after consultations, the specialists of the Center resorted to this modified method of mini-invasive intervention.

“During the intervention, we implanted a corrective plate under the chest, made a subcutaneous tunnel to the protruding rib arches, and created a compression arch from special threads, the so-called “magic string” that will press the ribs and keep them in the correct position. This is a modern modification of the Korean surgeon H. J. Park’s mini-invasive technique for the treatment of this type of chest deformation,” said the head of the pediatric surgery department of the Lviv National Medical University named after Danyla Halytskoho, pediatric surgeon of the Andriy Kuzyk Center.

The surgeons performed the operation under bilateral thoracoscopic control. The reconstructive intervention lasted about two hours and passed without complications. Ostap will wear a plate and threads for 3-4 years, and then they will be removed.

According to doctor Andriy Kuzyk, approximately 10-15 such operations are performed at the hospital every year. Corrective interventions are needed to improve the function of internal organs and eliminate a cosmetic defect.
