Esophageal hernia provoked heartburn: Lviv doctors operated on a 57-year-old woman

A 57-year-old woman came to the Surgery Center of St. Panteleimon Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv with complaints of heartburn and constant belching, because she had been receiving treatment for a year without improvement. After examining the patient, the doctors referred her for a gastroscopy and X-ray with contrast, thanks to which they discovered a hernia of the esophageal opening of the diaphragm.

In order to help the patient, the surgeons performed laparoscopic surgery using a new, modern stand that transmits images in 4k, which is a significant advantage during the intervention. During the operation, specialists first eliminated the hernia, and then moved the stomach to its usual anatomical position. And at the end, the diaphragm opening was reconstructed, that is, a new valve was formed.

The operation lasted only 59 minutes, and the next day the woman went home without any complaints.

Surgeon Andrii Stasyshyn explains: “50% of heartburn treatment success is correct and timely diagnosis. If the causes of heartburn are not eliminated in the early period after its appearance, this condition leads to the development of ulcers and erosions, severe inflammatory diseases, narrowing of the esophagus and even malignant neoplasms.

Doctors emphasize: every third Ukrainian suffers from heartburn, but not everyone turns to a doctor with such a problem. And few people know that heartburn can lead to the development of serious diseases, including inflammatory processes of the esophagus, bleeding and even cancer.

Heartburn can be caused by a number of pathologies, but one of the most frequent causes is a hernia of the esophageal opening of the diaphragm. It occurs in 25-30% of the entire adult population. This is a disease in which bile and hydrochloric acid from the stomach are thrown into the esophagus. And all because of a weak valve that is located between the esophagus and the stomach.
