A surgical center is planned to be built in Lviv, on the territory of the First Medical Association. It will become the world’s first innovative center – a special structure that will be adapted to Ukrainian medical parameters.
The project will be developed by Shigeru Ban – one of the most interesting modern architects, winner of the Pritzker Prize, which is the world’s most prestigious award for architects.
Today, Shigeru Ban visited the First Medical Association of Lviv, where he inspected the NEZLAMNI rehabilitation center, the mental health center, surgery, and talked with doctors and patients who are currently undergoing rehabilitation. He was impressed by the level of care at the hospital and the high standards by which the NEZLAMNI center was built.
“Your NEZLAMNI center is built to high standards. Good service here. When I came here and met with the mayor, I suggested building a center. The mayor of the city supported the project and asked for help with the design of this hospital,” said architect Shigeru Ban. He also assured that he will participate as much as possible in the search for partners who will help with financing in order to build the center as quickly as possible.
Mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovy noted that he is very happy with such cooperation, because the hospital in Lviv receives thousands of wounded Ukrainians, so another medical center will help provide faster and better care.
“This project is an innovative solution, there is no such special design in the world yet, and it will all be adapted to the parameters of our medicine. I am very happy about this kind of cooperation and thank Mr. Ban for his support,” said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy.
According to the project, the center will have eight floors – two underground and six above ground. The main structure is with concrete cores, and inside there will be wooden structures without metal joints. The Ukrainian architectural and engineering company abmk, which designed the NEZLAMNI rehabilitation center, will cooperate with Japanese colleagues so that the future project is adapted to Ukrainian requirements.
In addition, Shigeru Ban is one of the most interesting modern architects. Known for creating temporary shelters for people who have lost their homes out of non-traditional materials such as paper, bamboo, cloth. He is a laureate of the Pritzker Prize – one of the most prestigious in the field of architecture.
Shigeru Ban offered aid to Ukraine back in March 2022. Together with volunteers, he helped create temporary housing for Ukrainian immigrants in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and France. The structures designed by him were placed at train stations, in gyms, former supermarkets and special assistance centers. And in September 2022, the architect came to Lviv to give a lecture and present another project – cheap houses for displaced people: in theory, such housing can be assembled in a few weeks.
Shigeru Ban will speak at the Lviv Urban Forum today as a star guest of the event. It is here, at the forum, that the world’s leading architects and urban planners discuss the values and standards of Ukraine’s reconstruction.
