The doctors of “Okhmatdyt” saved a newborn child with a severe congenital defect of the esophagus

The boy was born with esophageal atresia with a lower tracheoesophageal fistula.

The patient was hospitalized at the Lviv Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital “OHMATDYT” on the second day after birth. Doctors immediately performed a full examination and confirmed the diagnosis.

This severe congenital pathology is accompanied by foamy discharge from the mouth and nasal passages, cough, wet wheezing, shortness of breath, immediately after feeding, the child vomits milk along with mucus, bluish skin appears. In such cases, aspiration pneumonia progresses, which threatens the life of the child.

Therefore, the doctors decided to perform an operation to restore the esophagus. After the successful operation, the child was under the supervision of the doctors of the Department of Anesthesiology and Neonatal Intensive Care for another 10 days.

“With the joint efforts of surgeons, anesthesiologists and pediatricians, the boy’s esophagus was restored, and at the same time he was given a chance to live. Now the child can eat independently, gains weight and develops like a normal healthy child. For a certain period of his life, he will be under the supervision of a pediatric thoracic surgeon and pediatricians. I would like to note that in our hospital, about 10 children are operated on with such a complex pathology every year,” commented Oleg Leniv, a thoracic surgeon at the hospital.
