Lviv Doctors Performed Neurosurgical Intervention, Saving a Pregnant Woman from Paralysis

34-year-old Oksana Birsan, who was temporarily living in the United Kingdom, encountered a serious health issue that forced her to return to Ukraine for treatment. During her stay abroad, it became apparent that Oksana was suffering from severe back pain, which posed a threat of paralysis.

In Ukraine, she consulted with qualified specialists at the neurosurgical department of St. Panteleimon Hospital in Lviv, where she underwent thorough examination. The MRI confirmed the severity of the situation, which required urgent surgical intervention.

The surgery was performed during the 13th week of her pregnancy and involved the removal of a part of an intervertebral disc with a hernia approximately 15 mm in size. According to Ostap Fedorko, the head of the hospital’s center for neurosurgery and neurology, operating was critical as any slight damage to the nerve could lead to paralysis.

Fortunately, the neurosurgical intervention was successful. The very next day after the surgery, Oksana felt significant relief. Treatment and further rehabilitation in Ukraine will allow her to safely continue her pregnancy and return to the United Kingdom as a healthy and happy mother.
