A modern resuscitation vehicle for rescuing babies from St. Nicholas Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv was donated by German friends from Hilfsorganisation-Stützpfeiler e.V. The mission united residents of 46 cities in Germany, and Mike Menke, a firefighter from the city of Paderborn and the head of the organization, delivered aid.
In February of this year, Mike visited St. Nicholas Hospital and learned that the doctors needed a modern vehicle for the comfortable transportation of babies. The ambulance that was in the hospital is outdated for use.
Many people responded to Mike’s call, and in just four months the resuscitation car was purchased and equipped with the necessary equipment. These are, in particular: a modern incubator, a device for lung ventilation, a stretcher, a monitor for patient control, syringe pumps for administering medications. This equipment of the ambulance makes it possible to transport children from one medical institution to another with comfort, supporting all vital functions of the baby.
The cost of the ambulance is 120,000 euros, and this is the largest amount of aid that Mike Menke has provided.
“Our friends didn’t have time to deliver the ambulance to the neonatal unit, when the several-day-old baby immediately needed the help of an ambulance. The girl was taken for examination at the hospital of St. Panteleimon, which is near us. She has a congenital defect of the central nervous system, so she will need neurosurgical intervention,” says the general director of St. Mykola’s Hospital, Ivan Miskiv.
By the way, during a year and a half of trips to Ukraine, Mike Menke provided various assistance for more than UAH 1 million. This is, in particular, the help of the Armed Forces. And this time, Mike received a commemorative award and a boxing glove signed by Vitaliy Klitschko in the hospital for the help provided.

The Neonatology Center of St. Nicholas Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv consists of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of Newborns and the Department of Neonatal Pathology. This is a place where babies from 500 grams (from 22 weeks of gestation) with developmental disabilities can receive help. The children are cared for by a team of anesthesiologists and neonatologists. Parents have the opportunity to visit babies who are in intensive care.
Powerful centers of surgery, neurosurgery and cardiac surgery are functioning in St. Nicholas Hospital. So any specialists can provide help and operate on the child. Due to the functioning of the maternity ward in the structure of the hospital, the medical facility provides a full cycle of care from birth, carrying out resuscitation measures and leaving babies, until recovery.
The anesthesiology and intensive care department has 12 beds, the neonatal pathology department has 30 beds. Patients from all over Ukraine are accepted here, the team leaves 24/7.
