Lviv Doctors Performed the Most Transplants in Ukraine in 2024

The Transplantation Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv became Ukraine’s leader in the number of transplants performed in 2024. The team conducted 143 surgeries, including 20 heart transplants, 104 kidney transplants, and 19 liver transplants, setting a national record for the year.

Among these operations, the transplantation of a heart-kidney complex stands out as a landmark achievement—it was the second such operation in Ukraine’s history and the first performed in Lviv. Additionally, laparoscopic kidney harvesting from a living donor was introduced, and the team saved the life of a Ukrainian defender by performing a liver transplant.

National Achievements in Transplantology

In 2024, Ukrainian transplant teams performed 467 transplants, surpassing the 406 procedures conducted in 2023. Over the past four years, as transplantology has been actively developing in Ukraine, more than 1,500 organ transplants have been carried out.

Maxym Ovechko, head of the Transplantation Center, emphasized that 65% of this year’s operations were made possible by posthumous organ donation. He expressed gratitude to the donors’ families who, despite their loss, chose to save other lives through organ donation.

New Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit

A significant achievement this year was the opening of a bone marrow transplantation unit at St. Panteleimon Hospital in Lviv. Eight transplants have already been successfully performed there, including the first allogeneic stem cell transplant from a related donor in western Ukraine.

Over 3,000 Patients Await Transplants

Currently, more than 3,000 patients in Ukraine are waiting for life-saving organ transplants. In Lviv, where over 400 organs have been transplanted in the last four years, efforts continue to advance transplantation and provide cutting-edge care.
