Lviv doctors performed the largest number of transplants in Ukraine

In the first nine months of 2024, the Transplantation Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv performed 106 organ transplants from related and posthumous donors, giving patients a chance for a new life.

This is the largest number of transplants among all medical institutions in Ukraine during this period.

“Our transplant team is doing everything possible to give each patient a second chance at life. It is incredible when people return to a full life after serious illnesses,” the Transplantation Centre says.

According to the Ukrainian Center for Transplant Coordination, 373 organ transplants were performed in Ukraine in 2024, including 250 kidney transplants, 73 liver transplants, and 50 heart transplants.

The leader in terms of the number of operations was the First Medical Association of Lviv – 106 transplants. This is followed by the Shalimov National Research Centre for Surgery and Transplantation (62 operations) and the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (37 operations). Currently, there are 3,438 patients on the national waiting list for organ transplants.

Lviv has long been a leader in transplantation. The first transplant was performed here in February 2020, and since then more than 400 organ transplants have been performed, including heart, liver, kidney and lung transplants. Lviv doctors were the first in Ukraine to perform a pancreas-kidney transplant, as well as the first to transplant a heart-lung complex and perform a successful split liver transplant.
