For the 13th year in a row, dermatovenereologists of the Lviv region are holding a series of events in the spring on the occasion of the All-Ukrainian Melanoma Day.
Relevant events on a national scale have been held since 2009 in accordance with the Protocol of Ukraine’s accession to the World Program “Euromelanoma”, the participants of which are more than 20 European countries.
“Melanoma is one of the most malignant skin tumors in oncology with a fairly rapid development. Every year, up to 160 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the Lviv region, with an 11% mortality rate among them. Early detection of suspicious pigmented neoplasms of the skin provides an opportunity for timely surgical treatment with full recovery of patients. Scientists consider the cause of melanoma to be excessive tanning, the presence of multiple pigmented nevi, and a hereditary factor. Therefore, the highest incidence is registered in the southern regions of Ukraine with frequent lesions of open areas of the skin – face, neck, lower legs, forearms. A dangerous melanoma with early hematogenous metastasis with damage to the liver, lungs, and bones,” said Orysia Sizon, an expert in dermatovenerology of LOVA’s health care department.
In the vast majority of cases, melanoma looks like a dark-colored skin tumor, sometimes bleeding when touched, with uneven edges. But it can be quite diverse in color and shape. Preliminary diagnosis can be established during dermatoscopy. Modern digital dermatoscopes allow you to examine suspicious skin lesions and suspect melanoma with high reliability. The final diagnosis is established only after removal of the tumor and histological examination.
To facilitate the detection of symptoms of skin neoplasms, there is a special abbreviation table that helps monitor the condition of nevi – “ACCORD”:
A – asymmetry (the birthmark can be conditionally divided into 2 equal parts);
K – edges (must be equal);
K – bleeding;
O – color (uniform);
P – size (the bigger the mole, the more dangerous it is);
D – dynamics (any changes – color, edges, cracks, etc.).
The purpose of the social action is to draw people’s attention to the dangers of long exposure to the sun, to carry out an examination for the early detection of skin cancer, which is crucial for increasing the chances of defeating the disease.
“In the Lviv region, specialists – members of the Lviv regional branch of the UALDVK, who have undergone appropriate training – are required to participate in the project: dermatovenerologist doctors and employees of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology of the Danylo Halytsky National Medical University of Lviv. The conducted examination will give an opportunity to citizens, who usually, for one reason or another, do not know where to turn to with a problem that worries them, to deny or confirm their suspicions with subsequent referral to the appropriate medical institutions. After all, the most important thing in medical practice is to save the patient’s life,” added Orysya Sizon.
