In a Lviv hospital, an infant with a congenital intestinal defect was operated on immediately after birth

Doctors operated on a baby with gastroschisis immediately after birth at St. Nicholas Hospital. This is a pathology in which babies are born with their intestines outside. Previously, children born with such defects were transported to another facility for surgery. But now it’s all possible at the children’s hospital.

“This child is one of those born with the intestines outside. But she was born here, in the St. Nicholas Hospital. Therefore, this time doctors operated on a child with such a congenital pathology immediately after birth and in accordance with world standards. With this, doctors minimized the risks of complications and prevented the development of infection outside the abdominal wall of the intestine. And the little one’s path to recovery will be much shorter,” the St. Nicholas Hospital reports.

During pregnancy, Iryna’s mother was abroad, but decided to give birth to a child in Ukraine. During a routine examination, she was informed that the baby has a congenital malformation of the intestine – gastroschisis. This is a defect of the anterior abdominal wall – a small hole through which loops of intestines and other organs fall out.

Having learned about the opening of a maternity ward with the possibility of operating on a child after birth on the spot – at the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital, the parents turned to specialists for help.

First, the team of the maternity ward with obstetrician-gynecologists Valdemar Nadizhka and Lidia Borysova performed a caesarean section. By the way, the woman in labor was 38 weeks pregnant. And as soon as the baby was born, she was handed over to surgeons in the nearby operating room. Then, within one minute, while the anesthesia team was preparing the baby for the intervention, they had to make a decision about what to do next.

Children’s surgeon Halyna Kurylo and head of the Surgery Center of our children’s hospital Andriy Dvorakevich conducted a quick assessment of the condition of the intestine and decided to act according to the method of the English surgeon Bianchi. In accordance with this intervention tactic, surgeons carefully inserted loops of intestine into the abdominal cavity without dilating the opening. And then they sewed up the abdominal wall.

Now the child is under the close supervision of specialists in the neonatal intensive care unit. Its head, Volodymyr Chuyko, together with the resuscitation team, provide conditions for maintaining the functions of vital organs and systems, restoring the functions of the baby’s gastrointestinal tract.
