In Lviv, surgeons operated on the lips of a 6-year-old patient with a rare disease

The child was born without a palate.

6-year-old Angelina had a very wide cleft palate with cheek tissue. It is one of the most common congenital anomalies affecting children worldwide.

The girl’s family comes from the Khmelnytskyi region. None of the doctors has yet undertaken to operate on the child. However, the surgeons of “Okhmatdyt” managed to perform a successful operation.

“For 6 years, we have visited many people from doctors. The operation was constantly postponed. There were always some nuances. And during the war, they were afraid to go anywhere. We are very pleasantly surprised by the Center for Children’s Medicine, “Okhmatdyt” Hospital and are glad that we came here. The doctors are all professional and good,” said Angelina’s mother, Nadiya.

This is the first operation for a 6-year-old girl. The child was examined in the surgical department. The tactics of operative treatment were determined by means of multidisciplinary cosilyums. The intervention was carried out by a team of doctors from the Center for Children’s Medicine, “Okhmatdyt” Hospital. After recovery, the girl was discharged home. A long period of rehabilitation awaits her.

By the way, incomplete formation of the upper lip (cleft lip) or palate (cleft palate) can occur separately, or both defects can occur together. The conditions can vary in severity and can affect one or both sides of the mouth. Surgery is necessary to repair a cleft lip or palate.

In total, in 2023, more than 200 children with maxillofacial pathology were operated on at the “Surgery Plus” Clinic of the “Okhmatdyt” hospital.
