In Lviv, doctors saved a seven-month-old girl with a giant lung cyst

When the child was brought to the children’s hospital of St. Nicholas of the First Medical Association of Lviv, the medicine took hours. Nicole was born with a lung cyst, but her parents didn’t know about it. During the seven months of the child’s life, with each breath, the cyst gradually inflated, grew and interfered with the development of the lungs.

And later, the formation began to compress and displace the internal organs of the chest cavity: the heart, the left lung, and the trachea. And one day, the parents noticed that their little one had shortness of breath, and breaths became short. After examinations in the city and district hospitals, the girl was urgently referred to Lviv, to the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital, already in critical condition.

The cyst occupied two-thirds of the volume of lung tissue and could burst at any moment and kill the child. Oxygen and blood pressure readings were critically low, and the mass had to be removed immediately. So the baby was immediately operated on.

“At that time, the cyst had already occupied the entire right and partially the left half of the girl’s lungs. The operation became a real challenge for anesthesiologists, because normally the trachea should be placed in the middle of the chest, and in Nicole this organ was completely shifted to the left. Therefore, in order to put the girl under anesthesia, the anesthesiologists had to show great skill.

Children’s surgeons also performed jewelry work. They feared that Nicole would have to remove her entire lung. However, the worst predictions did not come true. The doctors removed only the middle part, which is about 30% of the left half of the paired organ,” the First Medical Association of Lviv reported.

The complex surgical intervention was successful. After the giant cyst was removed, the displaced chest organs returned to their places. And the girl recovered very quickly. She has already returned home and is doing well. The doctors assure: the girl will grow up healthy and develop like all children, and in the future she will be able to do sports without hindrance.
