Taiwanese government invests nearly $2,000,000 in burn treatment in Ukraine (video)

The First Medical Association of Lviv and the Christian Medical Association Charitable Foundation signed a memorandum of cooperation. Its goal will be to implement the international project Medical aid for burns, which aims to systematically improve the quality of medical care for burn patients in Ukraine.

The memorandum was signed at the City Council with the participation of Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and Taiwanese doctors from MacKay International Medical Service Center.

12 thousand children and thousands of adults receive burns in Ukraine every year. A quarter of them are severe and extremely severe. In adults, 80% are flame burns, and in children, 70% are boiling water burns. In times of war, the situation worsens and is aggravated by mine-blast injuries.

According to the Washington Institute for Health Assessment, our country is among the five countries with the highest mortality rate for burns, so this project aims to change the situation.

“We are launching the national Burns project to cover all major burn units in the country. We will start with Lviv hospitals. It involves training and internships at the best hospitals in the world and the purchase of artificial skin and the best equipment.

This project is supported by the Taiwanese government. The total cost is $1.9 million,” Rudolf Myhovych, President of the Christian Medical Association

The project currently involves burn units in Lviv, Kyiv, and Vinnytsia. In Lviv, these are two institutions of the First Medical Association – St. Nicholas Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital.

Patients with burn injuries will be provided with expensive artificial skin (it has already been purchased for $870 thousand). The project also provides for the purchase of necessary medical equipment and consumables.

“The First Medical Association has two large burn departments, one for adults and one for children. They receive people with burns from all over Ukraine. These are extremely difficult patients, so we need to create the best conditions for them so that they can recover and return to life.

Burn disease is a very serious illness that requires a lot of effort to cope with. Treatment requires a lot of consumables, and special conditions are needed for serious patients. That’s why we are grateful to everyone who helps us, especially now, as the number of such patients is constantly growing in times of war,” said Oleh Samchuk, CEO of the TMO1.

As part of the Medical Aid for Burns project, Ukrainian burn doctors will be able to train at Harvard Medical School in the United States and take master classes from Australian experts. Physical therapists who work with burn patients will be able to train in Germany and take an online training course on the NHS platform.

It is also planned to bring plastic surgery specialists to Ukraine to share their experience. Conferences on combustiology are planned.

The Medical aid for burns project is being implemented with the support of Ambassador of Taiwan Sharon S. N. Wu within the framework of the Warsaw Memorandum of Cooperation with the Christian Medical Association of Ukraine Foundation dated November 14, 2023.
