In the Ohmatdyt medical center in Lviv, revolutionary treatment was carried out on Tadey, a 14-year-old boy with Down syndrome. His breathing was restored through a series of complex operations to remove total scarring stenosis of the larynx and trachea. The collaboration of doctors from Ukraine and the Polyclinical Institute in Poland under the leadership of Professor Yaroslav Shydlowski led to the successful surgical intervention in September 2024.
The final operations in January 2025 confirmed the success of the procedures, allowing Tadey to get rid of the tracheostomy and breathe without external assistance. The boy regained his ability to breathe naturally and communicate, which is vital for his development and well-being.
According to the medical director of the pediatric otolaryngology clinic, Fedor Yurochko, the surgery involved the removal of damaged scar tissues and their subsequent stitching to ensure a normal airway.
Tadey’s parents and the medical team at the clinic testify to significant progress in his growth and physical condition after the surgery. Furthermore, further dental treatment is planned, which can now be conducted without additional health risks for the boy.
