“The cyst was the size of a tennis ball”: the team of “Okhmatdit” doctors successfully operated on a newborn girl with an ovarian cyst
The cyst was more than 8 centimeters in diameter.
Family from Chervonograd, Lviv region. The girl was admitted to the hospital when she was 7 days old from the district maternity hospital of the Lviv region. Perinatally, the baby was diagnosed with a cyst of the pelvic cavity. After the examination and examination at the Children’s Medicine Center of the Okhmatdyt Hospital, the doctors discovered that the newborn Zlata had a huge cyst on her left ovary. Therefore, we decided to perform the intervention by the laparoscopic method (minimally invasive, without incisions, only with the help of small punctures).
According to doctors, the operation was successful. The cyst was more than 8 centimeters in diameter. For comparison, its size is like a tennis ball. On the 5th day after the intervention, the girl was successfully discharged home in a satisfactory condition.
“This operation is unique in that it is performed laparoscopically. In newborn children, the use of a minimally invasive method of intervention is quite small due to the small volume of the abdomen. In our Center, this is not the first time we have operated on a newborn child with this method. This is, in fact, jewelry work. And there are good postoperative results of our team. We will continue,” Bohdan Malyovany, the medical director of surgical work, emphasized.
Note that 1 child out of 1,000–2,500 thousand is born with this pathology.
Operating team: medical director of surgical work, pediatric surgeon Bohdan Malyovaniy, pediatric surgeon-intern Solomiya Kovch, gynecologist Nataliya Kozak, head of the department of anesthesiology and intensive care of newborns, anesthesiologist Galina Zaremba, senior operating nurse Lyubov Horak, anesthetist Lesya Stetskovich.
