As of December 16, two patients with cold-related injuries are receiving inpatient care in Lviv’s city hospitals: one person with hypothermia and another with frostbite.
Case Details:
- On December 12, a homeless man with frostbite on both feet was admitted to St. Luke’s Hospital. His condition is stable, and he is receiving the necessary medical care.
- Another patient with mild hypothermia is being treated at St. Panteleimon’s Hospital.
The City Council urges residents to be attentive to people at risk of cold exposure, especially the homeless. If you see someone who might be suffering from hypothermia, call emergency medical services.
How to Avoid Hypothermia and Frostbite
The City Health Department shares the following tips to stay safe in cold weather:
- Dress in layers to retain body heat.
- Protect your face, neck, and hands from wind and cold.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to cold, especially in damp or windy conditions.
- Avoid alcohol, as it creates the illusion of warmth while increasing the risk of frostbite.
Signs of Frostbite:
- Numbness or tingling sensations.
- Red skin, followed by loss of sensitivity.
- Skin turning white and hardening.
Prompt action and assistance can save someone’s health or life.
