Surgeons at the UNBROKEN Rehabilitation Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv saved 38-year-old soldier Yaroslav Petryshyn from Yavoriv. After a critical injury, his leg was amputated, and he is now preparing for prosthetics and recovery.
Injury Story
Yaroslav Petryshyn, a construction worker before mobilization, joined the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade in 2022. In the summer of 2024, he suffered severe injuries during combat.
“It was a rainy night with poor visibility. We were driving without headlights and hit a mined area. The explosion happened directly under me,” Yaroslav recalls.
The blast severely damaged both legs, especially the right one, with torn veins, arteries, and shrapnel wounds. Emergency surgery was performed in Dnipro, after which he was evacuated in critical condition to the UNBROKEN center in Lviv.
Surgery and Rehabilitation
In the first six days, doctors fought to save his life. Due to extensive vascular damage, surgeons had to amputate his right leg. Skin grafting was performed to restore his left leg.
Rehabilitation efforts focused on:
- Strengthening muscles of the stump and the remaining limb.
- Scar management, making them elastic and reducing discomfort.
- Compression therapy to prepare the stump for prosthetics.
“Yaroslav is now fully prepared for prosthetic fitting,” said physical therapist Andriy Novosad.
New Goals and Hopes
Yaroslav’s first goal after prosthetics and rehabilitation is to return to driving.
“I won’t be able to work as a construction worker anymore, but I’d love to find a driving-related job,” he shared.
