Lviv region honors the memory of the victims of political repression

The number of those tortured by the communist government is still impossible to count.

Today, May 21, the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression is celebrated in Lviv Oblast, as well as throughout Ukraine. Representatives of the government and the public laid flowers and lit candles near the monument to the Victims of Communist Crimes, honoring all victims of the totalitarian regime. Afterwards, an ecumenical memorial service was held. Andriy Godyk, the first deputy head of Lviv OVA, joined the commemoration ceremony.

It should be noted that the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression is an annual national memorial day in Ukraine. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of May in accordance with the Presidential Decree of May 21, 2007. The goal is to draw society’s attention to the tragic events in the history of Ukraine caused by the violent introduction of communist ideology.

The number of victims of political terror is still impossible to calculate – it is hundreds of thousands of tortured, shot and starved people. Most of the repressed were Ukrainians, but victims of terror in Ukraine were also representatives of other nationalities.
