LKP “Lvivavtodor” offers to solve the problem of traffic jams at the intersection of St. Shevchenko – Yaroslav the Wise – Pstrak

In Lviv, in order to reduce traffic jams in front of the traffic light at the intersection of St. Shevchenko – str. Yaroslav the Wise – str. Pstraka proposes to ban the left turn from the street. Shevchenko on St. Yaroslav the Wise. The scheme, which provides for these changes, is currently being approved by the Department of Patrol Police in the Lviv region.

Immediately after the launch of this traffic light facility, experts from the department of transport planning and modeling of the Lvivavtodor LKP began real-time studies of intensities, distribution by direction, length of queues and the number of vehicles passing the stop line during the duration of the permit signal. Significant queues at the intersection of St. Shevchenko – str. Yaroslav the Wise – st. Pstraka is determined by the configuration of the street and three intensive traffic flows – st. Shevchenko from/to the center and st. Yaroslav the Wise.

“The solution to this problem is to ban left turns from the street. Shevchenko on St. Yaroslav the Wise (installation of road signs 3.23 “Left turn prohibited”) at the approach to the intersection. In this way, it becomes possible to allow vehicles from the center and to the center along the street at the same time. Shevchenko (that is, it is possible to give cars from the center more time to travel, which in turn will reduce queues and delays). Thanks to the fact that on the street Shevchenko streams will be able to move in one phase of movement, the duration of the permission signal on the street. Yaroslav the Wise will be increased, which will significantly reduce traffic delays,” explains LKP “Lvivavtodor”.

After the approval of this ODR by the Patrol Police Department in Lviv Region, installation of road signs, road markings and reprogramming of the road controller will be carried out.

“Also, during the research, a problem with long intervals between vehicles was noticeable. For example, the green signal is on at the traffic light – the first car starts moving, and the next car starts moving after 3-4, and sometimes more seconds. It is necessary to understand that in this way the useful effect of the green signal is significantly reduced, i.e., during the time of the traffic light’s permissive signal, significantly fewer cars pass the stop line than should actually be the case. We ask drivers to react faster, start moving and keep a safe distance between cars”, – emphasizes the transport planning and modeling department of the “Lvivavtodor” LKP.

We would like to add that the traffic on the street Shevchenko towards the center is organized with two traffic lanes, one of them is for private transport. After the intersection of St. Shevchenko – str. Yaroslav the Wise – st. Traffic towards the center is carried out in a single traffic lane. As for the movement of public transport, it has priority passage thanks to the public transport lane and traffic light regulation. Traffic on the street Shevchenko from the center is carried out by one common traffic lane. The movement of cyclists is organized along the entire length of the street with a bicycle lane and a bicycle path.
