Up to 60% of Waste in Lviv Community is Organic: Residents Urged to Sort Food Waste

According to the Lviv Municipal Enterprise “Green City,” organic waste accounts for approximately 40–60% of all household garbage within the Lviv territorial community. Residents are being encouraged to sort food waste and dispose of it in designated organic waste containers to ensure proper recycling.

A municipal composting facility is already operating in Lviv, handling both garden and food waste. The organic material is processed into natural compost, which can be effectively used in gardening, farming, and landscaping.

“When residents sort their waste, it reduces the volume sent to landfills. This enables more efficient recycling of materials like organic matter, paper, plastic, and glass,” said representatives of “Green City.”

The organization reminds citizens that as of July 2023, Ukraine has implemented the Waste Management Law, launching a comprehensive national reform in this area. According to the National Waste Management Plan, the country aims to reduce landfill disposal of household waste by 30% by 2033.

Lviv is already making significant progress toward this goal. By sorting food waste, residents play a vital role in building a cleaner and more sustainable future.
