A month ago, two-year-old Ani’s mother noticed swelling on her daughter’s neck. When the baby began to grow, the woman turned to the city children’s hospital of St. Nicholas in Lviv.
Medics found pus inside the formation. Therefore, the operation was performed and the child was sent home to the Lviv region. But the situation repeated itself. A week ago, Anya was hospitalized again. In addition to the noise, there was also the temperature. Medicines did not help, so the child was again prepared for surgery.
Already in the operating room, the surgeons noticed that the veins and arteries in the swollen area on the neck were intertwined in a 6-centimeter ball and were squeezing each other. This is a rare genetic pathology called arteriovenous malformation. She could have killed the child.
An arteriovenous malformation is a tangled, dilated blood vessel in which the arteries flow directly into the veins. This pathology is very rare and manifests itself at different ages. In the girl’s situation, she was at risk of suppuration, soft tissue deformations at the site of formation, facial bruising, blood clots, bleeding, and disruption of vital body functions due to pressure on nearby vessels and nerves. But Ana is no longer in danger, because the doctors eliminated the defect by separating the most important blood vessels during the intervention.
Therefore, after a few days, Anya is cheerful again and runs through the corridors of the hospital, and very soon she will be able to return to her family.
