
On Saturday, 12 October, in Lviv, farewell ceremonies will be held for servicemen Yaroslav Martyn and Yurii Dlugosh, who gave their lives defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities are calling on Lviv residents and visitors to join the ceremonies and to refrain from entertainment events and celebrations at this time.
The farewell for Yaroslav Martyn will begin at 9:30 at the Church of Andrew on Soborna Square. The funeral service for both defenders will be held at 11:00 at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. A citywide farewell ceremony on Rynok Square is scheduled for approximately 11:30.
The soldiers will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery, in the Field of Honourable Burials No. 87 on Pasichna Street.
Yaroslav Martyn (08.05.1969 — 08.08.2026) was a Lviv native. He studied at Lyceum No. 18 of the Lviv City Council and later graduated from Lviv Secondary Vocational Technical School No. 25, where he qualified as an installer of radio equipment and instruments, 4th grade. He completed compulsory military service.
He worked as an installer of radio equipment and instruments at the public joint-stock company ‘Kineskop’, and later as a driver at the Lviv Municipal Utility ‘Lvivvodokanal’, the subsidiary enterprise ‘Yusenko Ukraina’, the limited liability company ‘InterTelekom’ and LLC ‘Sigma Styl’.
According to his family, Yaroslav was very devoted to his family, kind and sociable, always ready to help, able to find common ground with people easily and with a good sense of humour. He was distinguished by his patriotism, sense of responsibility and his sincere, active love for Ukraine. He loved reading fiction and popular science literature, travelling in the mountains, and enjoyed fishing. Nature held a special place in his life; he had a keen eye for it and loved to photograph it.
After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he voluntarily joined the ranks of Ukraine’s defenders. He fought for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state in the Southern Slobozhanskyi and Donetsk sectors as part of the 125th Separate Heavy Mechanised Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was awarded the medal ‘War Veteran’.
Yaroslav Martyn is survived by his mother, wife, daughter, two sons, son-in-law, granddaughter, brother with his family, godparents, mother-in-law, goddaughters, close family friends, in-laws, friends, comrades-in-arms, colleagues and his extended family.
Yurii Dlugosh (02.05.1987 — 13.06.2024) was born in Lviv. He studied at Secondary Comprehensive School I–III Levels No. 50 in Lviv and later received vocational education at the state educational institution ‘Lviv Interregional Higher Vocational School of Railway Transport’.
After completing his studies, he worked in the construction sector at private enterprises. His family remember him as a sincere, kind and sociable person who easily found common ground with those around him. In his free time, Yurii enjoyed football, fishing and active outdoor recreation.
In 2024, he took up arms to defend Ukraine from Russia’s large-scale aggression. He defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state in the Donetsk sector as part of the 5th Separate Assault Kyiv Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Yurii Dlugosh is survived by his daughter, brother and other relatives.
