Farewell to defender Ivan Petruniv to be held in Lviv on 16 July

On Thursday, 16 July, a farewell ceremony will be held in Lviv for serviceman Ivan Petruniv, who gave his life defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities are calling on Lviv residents and visitors to join the ceremony and to refrain at this time from entertainment events and celebrations.

The funeral service will begin at 11:00 at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. At approximately 11:30, a citywide farewell ceremony will take place on Rynok Square. The warrior will be laid to rest at Lychakiv Cemetery, in the Field of Honourable Burials No. 87 on Pasichna Street.

Ivan Petruniv (28.06.1970 — 25.04.2025) was a Lviv native. He studied at Secondary Comprehensive School No. 67 in Lviv and later trained as a shoe assembler at the Lviv Vocational Technical College. After completing his compulsory military service, he worked in the construction sector for private companies.

His family remember Ivan as an exemplary family man — kind, sincere, sensitive and responsible. He was a loving husband and caring father for whom family always came first. He enjoyed fishing and loved to cook.

With the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ivan Petruniv took up arms to defend his homeland. He first defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine as part of the 223rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment named after the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Since 2025, he had been carrying out combat missions in the Donetsk sector as part of the 79th Separate Air Assault Tavria Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

For his service, Ivan Petruniv was awarded the medal “For Participation in Battle”. He is survived by his wife, a daughter with her family, a son with his family and other close relatives.
