On Thursday, 6 August, a city farewell ceremony will be held in Lviv for servicemen Mykola Sliepko and Dmytro Berezko, who were killed defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities are calling on Lviv residents and visitors to join in honouring the memory of the defenders and to refrain from entertainment during this time.
The farewell to soldier Dmytro Berezko will begin at 09:00 in the Church of the Ascension of Our Lord of the UGCC at 81a Shyroka Street. The funeral service for both servicemen is scheduled for 10:00 in the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. At approximately 10:30 a citywide farewell ceremony will take place on Rynok Square. The defenders will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery, in the Field of Honourable Burials No. 87 on Pasichna Street.
Dmytro Berezko (29.10.1992 — 12.12.2025) was born in the village of Marianivka in Ternopil region. He studied at Marianivka Primary School, a branch of the municipal institution “Nastasiv Lyceum” of the Velyka Berezovytsia Settlement Council, and later continued his education at Bohdanivka Gymnasium in Ternopil district. After completing his studies, he worked in the construction sector for private companies.
According to his family, Dmytro was kind, calm and even-tempered, a jack of all trades and a caring father who loved the mountains and appreciated a good sense of humour. In 2024 he joined the ranks of Ukraine’s defenders, safeguarding its territorial integrity and sovereignty in the Donetsk sector as part of the 2nd Separate Halychyna Brigade of the Western Operational and Territorial Association of the National Guard of Ukraine. Dmytro Berezko is survived by his mother, wife, daughter, sisters, brothers and other relatives.
Mykola Sliepko (16.05.1980 — 15.12.2025) was originally from the village of Tysovytsia in Lviv region. He studied at the general secondary education institution of grades I–II in his native village, and after leaving school qualified as a turner at the vocational (vocational and technical) education institution “Turka Vocational College”. He completed his compulsory military service in the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and later worked in construction for private companies.
His family remember Mykola as a kind, sincere, cheerful and responsible man who always supported his loved ones. He was a caring family man who enjoyed making things, restoring objects and engaging in creative work, including icon painting. Mykola was a participant in the Anti-Terrorist Operation and, with the onset of the full-scale invasion, once again took up arms to defend Ukraine. He defended the country in the Donetsk sector as part of the 2nd Separate Halychyna Brigade of the Western Operational and Territorial Association of the National Guard of Ukraine. Mykola Sliepko is survived by his wife, son, daughter, parents, brother and other family members.
