The Drohobych community mourns another loss as Stepan Kushnir, a defender of Ukraine, was killed in the war against the enemy. Today, the body of the fallen Hero was brought to his hometown for a final farewell.
Biography of the Hero
Stepan Kushnir was born on October 5, 1972, in the village of Dobriavlyany. After graduating from the local school, he worked at the Dolotny plant and later served in the army. He settled in Drohobych on Volodymyr Velykyi Street, where he worked in façade insulation.
On March 3, 2022, after the full-scale invasion began, Stepan volunteered to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Initially, he served in air defense units but later transferred to military unit A4053, where he continued carrying out combat missions on the front lines.
Senior Sergeant Stepan Kushnir, a machine-gun platoon commander, was killed in battle on December 30, 2024, near the village of Torske in the Kramatorsk district of Donetsk Oblast, while defending Ukraine.
Farewell and Burial
On January 4, the body of the fallen defender arrived in Drohobych. At Heroes’ Crossroad, relatives, comrades, and locals gathered to honor him, with clergy leading a communal prayer.
The funeral procession then moved to Rynok Square for a city-wide farewell ceremony attended by clergy, local authorities, and residents.
The final farewell took place at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Volodymyr Velykyi Street. The Hero was laid to rest at the cemetery in his native village of Dobriavlyany.
Stepan Kushnir is survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren.
