Ihor Sym from the village of Bratkivtsi in the Stryi community is returning home borne on a shield. The soldier, an operator in the dosimetric and chemical control section of the radiation, chemical and biological protection company of a military unit, was killed on 30 March 2026.
The serviceman was born and lived all his life in Bratkivtsi. He studied at Bratkivtsi School and later at Stryi VPTU No. 34. After qualifying, he worked at Stryi ATP, as an electric welder at the Stryi Wagon Repair Plant, and later at TOV “Heorozvidka”.
In February 2025, Ihor Sym was mobilised into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. His comrades-in-arms and relatives note that he fulfilled his military duty with honour and dignity.
While carrying out a special combat mission in the area of the village of Fedorivka in the Izium district of Kharkiv region, an enemy drone struck the positions of Ukrainian defenders. After this, the soldier was considered missing for a long time.
The identity of Ihor Sym was established through DNA analysis. His parents, wife, daughter with her family, grandson, sisters with their families and the entire extended family waited for his return until the very end.
