This year in Lviv region, 189 war-disabled veterans of I and II disability groups, as well as members of the families of fallen Defenders, will receive state monetary compensation for the purchase of housing. Some of the relevant certificates were handed over during a meeting attended by Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine Ruslan Prykhodko, while the remaining families chose to receive their documents in their local communities.
In 2026, more than 500 million hryvnias were allocated to Lviv region for the implementation of this programme. Families choose their own housing – it may be on either the primary or secondary market, but it must necessarily have been commissioned.
The statement stresses that no material compensation can be compared with what Defenders and their families have given for Ukraine, but the state is obliged to provide support to those returning from the front or who have lost loved ones.
It is noted that the programme became possible thanks to the decision of the President of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Ministry for Veterans Affairs and the support of the European Union within the Ukraine Facility Platform. Housing compensations are one of the key areas of veterans policy in Lviv region.
The region employs 129 veteran support specialists. Rehabilitation units and mental health centres operate in all districts. Veterans and adaptive sports are developing: within the “League of the Unconquered” project, almost fifty events for veterans and their families have been held this year, while the necessary sports infrastructure is being created in parallel.
The “Therapy through Travel” project also continues, aimed at active leisure and emotional recovery for service personnel, veterans, their relatives, families of the missing and families of fallen male and female Defenders. Within its framework, hiking trips to the mountains, kayaking, horse riding and excursions are organised. More than 100 such trips have already taken place, involving over 3,000 people.
A separate area of work is education, employment and support for veteran-owned businesses. Since the beginning of the year, 87 veterans have signed agreements for free training and professional development, and a further 26 veteran-owned businesses and businesses run by their family members have received grant support.
Other housing-related programmes are also in place in Lviv region. In particular, the region compensates part of the interest rate on mortgage loans under the “eOselya” programme for specific categories, including service personnel, veterans and their family members. This has already made it possible to reduce the cost of loans for 636 borrowers.
According to the regional authorities, the aim of this work is to build a comprehensive support system that will help veterans and families of the fallen return to civilian life: to obtain housing, restore their health, study, work, play sports, start their own business and have all these opportunities within their communities in Lviv region.
