In the Drohobych community, the death of Roman Babyak, a defender of Ukraine and resident of the village of Derezhychi, who had been considered missing since January 2025, has been officially confirmed. This was reported by the Drohobych City Council.
Roman Babyak was born on 14 May 1993 in the village of Derezhychi. He studied at the local school and later at the Bohdan Lepkyi Gymnasium in Drohobych. He obtained his higher education at the Lviv Commercial Academy (University of Trade and Economics). As an adult, he lived abroad for a long time, but after the start of the full-scale war he returned to Ukraine and, from March 2023, joined the defence forces.
The serviceman served in forward positions, passing through the hottest sectors of the front. He was a senior lieutenant in the rifle battalion of military unit A7045. During his service he was wounded, but after treatment he returned once again to combat duties.
From 16 January 2025, while taking part in assault operations in the area of the settlement of Toretsk in the Bakhmut district of Donetsk region, contact with Roman Babyak was lost, after which he was considered missing. His death has now been officially confirmed, and the soldier’s body is being brought home for a farewell and burial.
The fallen defender is survived by his parents and a brother with his family. The Drohobych City Council, its executive committee, Mayor Taras Kuchma and Council Secretary Orest Karakevych have expressed their condolences to the family and friends of Roman Babyak.
The arrival of the funeral cortege with the defender’s body is expected on Monday, 14 September. At 13:00 a reception is planned at the Heroes’ crossroads in Drohobych. At 13:30 a citywide farewell will take place on Rynok Square. After this, the cortege will proceed to the village of Derezhychi, where at 14:30 a funeral service will be held in the Church of the Holy Trinity.
