The Drohobych community has received sorrowful news: the death of Ukraine’s defender, Drohobych resident Yurii Markiv, has been officially confirmed. From the first days of the full-scale invasion he joined the ranks of the country’s defenders.
Yurii Markiv was born on 19 October 1975 in Drohobych. After the start of Russia’s large-scale aggression against Ukraine, on 22 March 2022 he voluntarily joined the Armed Forces. He first served as a sapper in the 115th Brigade in the Donetsk sector. Later he transferred to the 225th Separate Assault Battalion, where he served as a rifleman and assistant grenadier, and sustained his first injury near Chasiv Yar.
After rehabilitation, the soldier once again returned to the front line. He was among the servicemen who held the defence on the so-called “Road of Life” near Avdiivka. For his courage he was awarded the Order “For Bravery” 3rd class. Later the Drohobych native took part in the Kursk operation, where he was wounded a second time, but after recovering he again returned to carrying out combat missions.
On 14 January 2025, while performing a combat mission near the village of Dar’yino in the Kursk region, contact with the soldier was lost, after which he was considered missing in action. Only now has the defender’s death been officially confirmed, and his body will be brought back to his home city for a final farewell and burial.
In mourning for Yurii Markiv are his wife, relatives and friends. The Drohobych City Council, its executive committee, Mayor Taras Kuchma and Council Secretary Orest Karakevych have expressed their condolences to the family of the fallen warrior on their grievous loss.
The Hero will be received on Monday, 5 October. The cortege with the defender’s body will arrive at the Heroes’ crossroads at 13:00. A city-wide farewell will begin at 13:30 on Rynok Square.
The funeral service will take place at 14:00 in the Church of Andrew the First-Called on Pylypa Orlyka Street. The defender will be laid to rest in the cemetery on the same street.
Eternal memory to Yurii Markiv.
