In Lviv, as a result of a Russian missile strike that occurred on 30 July, branch library No. 42 of the Lviv Municipal Library at 79 Vyhovskoho Street was severely damaged. The blast wave destroyed all the windows and doors of the building and also damaged its internal structures.
According to the Lviv City Council, cracks have appeared in the ceilings of the premises, with the most extensive damage sustained by the engineering structures. At the same time, the library’s book collection was not significantly affected: the blast wave passed along the shelves and, for the most part, the books simply fell down.
After the work of bomb disposal experts, it emerged that at the impact site there had been a risk of another detonation, which could have made the scale of destruction much greater. Emergency stabilisation work is currently under way in the building: the premises have been cleared, the doors have been temporarily adapted so they can be closed, and the windows have been covered with protective film with the support of LKP “Syayvo”.
Specialists have already carried out an expert inspection of the structure and prepared a technical report on the damage and a defect report. Cost estimates for the restoration works are currently being drawn up. Staff of the Lviv Municipal Library have organised shifts in the premises, while at night the site is guarded by LKP “Municipal Guard”.
Branch library No. 42 is currently not serving visitors. The same building also houses the Administrative Services Centre, the operation of which has likewise been affected by the consequences of the strike.
During the same missile attack in Lviv, in addition to residential buildings and the library, two more educational institutions were damaged — Lyceum No. 15 and Nursery School No. 139. Impacts were recorded, in particular, on residential buildings on Vyhovskoho and Patona Streets. The amount of compensation for destroyed windows and doors has been increased for affected residents.
Rescuers also discovered under the rubble of a destroyed building the body of a deceased man — Volodymyr Shandra, who became one of the victims of this missile strike on Lviv.
