On Saturday, 26 September, a city farewell ceremony will be held in Lviv for serviceman Taras Vovkanych, who gave his life defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities have appealed to Lviv residents and visitors to join the farewell and to refrain from entertainment events at this time.
The funeral service at the Garrison Church of Sts Peter and Paul the Apostles in Lviv will begin at 11:00. At approximately 11:30, a city farewell ceremony for the warrior will be held on Rynok Square. Taras Vovkanych will be laid to rest at Lychakiv Cemetery, in the field of honourable burials No. 87 on Pasichna Street.
Taras Vovkanych (1 June 1983 — 18 December 2023) was born in Lviv. He studied at Secondary School No. 13 in Lviv and later qualified as an auto mechanic at Vocational School No. 53. After completing his studies, he worked in the private construction sector.
According to his relatives, Taras was a kind, responsible and hard-working person, always ready to support others. He was passionate about sport, especially football, loved Ukrainian music and followed the news.
In 2023, Taras Vovkanych voluntarily took up arms to defend Ukraine from the Russian invasion. He defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state in the Zaporizhzhia sector as part of the 33rd Separate Mechanised Brigade of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The fallen defender is survived by his sister, two brothers, a niece and other family members.
