Lviv residents who defended Ukraine’s independence were posthumously awarded in Lviv

This year, Lviv started the awarding ceremony of the “Honorary Badge of St. George” award (posthumously) to our defenders, who have been defending the independence of Ukraine since 2014 and since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russians.

Today, on the eve of the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, 25 Lviv residents who died at the hands of the occupier were awarded (posthumously) medals. The awards were presented to the families of the defenders.

Such awards will be awarded to all Lviv residents who gave their lives for Ukraine. The ceremony will take place on the occasion of major state and national holidays. The first ceremony was held on May 26 on the occasion of Heroes’ Day – then 21 military personnel were awarded (posthumously), the next ceremony was held on June 27 on the occasion of the Constitution Day of Ukraine – then 26 military personnel were awarded (posthumously). Another ceremony was held on August 23 on the occasion of Flag Day and Independence Day of Ukraine, when 23 Lviv citizens were awarded with honors (posthumously).

The flags of all structures of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were hoisted in the large session hall of the Lviv City Council. A candle was also lit as a symbol of eternal memory of the Heroes. They started with a solemn performance of the National Anthem and a moment of silence.

“It is a great honor for me that today, on the eve of the Intercession, you and I are here, in the walls of the city council, we have the honor to honor our heroes, to thank you – every family that gave the most. We don’t know why this is God’s providence, but we know for sure – as long as we remember each of our heroes, he lives, he inspires, and he is the light that guides, directs each of us to live, work and continue that work, which he started Once again I want to thank all of you and bow low,” said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy.

Therefore, the awards were presented by the mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovy, the head of the National Academy of Ground Forces named after Hetman Petr Sagaidachny – lieutenant general Pavlo Tkachuk, the commander of the Air Command “West” – major general Borys Genov, the head of the Western Territorial Department of the National Guard of Ukraine – brigadier general Oleksandr Buravkov .

Also present at the event were: Deputy Commander of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo – Major Borys Grigoryan; deputy commander of the 45th separate artillery brigade – colonel Oleksandr Rogov; Deputy Head of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine – Colonel of the Civil Protection Service Timur Agadzhanov; Deputy Chief of the Western Regional Department of the State Border Service of Ukraine – Colonel Dmytro Lishchynskyi; senior officer of the 125th separate brigade of territorial defense – colonel Andrii Oleksyn; the first operational group of the 103rd separate territorial defense brigade – lieutenant colonel Rostyslav Tymkiv; senior operative group of the 80th separate amphibious assault brigade – lieutenant colonel Serhii Zhura; rector of the Garrison Church of St. App. Peter and Paul Fr. Taras Mikhalchuk.

  1. serviceman of the 128th separate Transcarpathian mountain assault brigade of the operational command “West” of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, junior sergeant Oleksandr Biyanov. Performed combat missions on the territory of Luhansk region, died on April 7, 2015 as a result of complications received in the combat zone. Lyubov Yakivna’s mother received the award.
  2. serviceman of the separate special purpose unit “Azov” of the Eastern operational-territorial unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, senior lieutenant of the medical service Oleg Kremez. Died on August 19, 2018 near the village of Yuryivka, Donetsk region. Son Taras received the award.
  3. serviceman of the 8th separate automobile sanitary company of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Sergeant Mykola Rudnyk. Died on February 4, 2019, during the evacuation of the wounded in the city of Pokrovsk, Donetsk region. Daughter Olena received the award.
  4. serviceman of the 54th separate reconnaissance battalion named after Mykhailo Tysha of the “North” operational command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Major Andriy Suprigan. Died on May 13, 2020 near the city of Kramatorsk, Donetsk region. Valery Anatoliyovych’s father received the award.
  5. Sergeant Dmytro Kabakov, a soldier of the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of the Airborne Assault Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Gave his life in the battles for Kyiv on February 25, 2022. Iryna’s wife received the award.

  9. serviceman of the 45th Separate Artillery Brigade of the Ground Forces Reserve Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Senior Lieutenant Ihor Sarkisyan. Died on March 13, 2022 as a result of an enemy missile attack. Father Oleksandr received the award.

  21. serviceman of the 12th brigade of the operational assignment named after Dmytro Vyshnevetsky of the Eastern operational-territorial unit of the National Guard of Ukraine junior sergeant Ihor Mykhailyshyn. Died on March 20, 2022 in the battles for the city of Mariupol. Mother Maria Broneslavna received the award.

  25. sergeant Andrii Kostiv, a soldier of the 24th separate mechanized brigade named after King Danylo of the “West” operational command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Died on March 29 during a combat clash near the city of Zolote, Luhansk region. The award was given to his wife Maria.

After that, the memory of all the Heroes was honored with a joint prayer. The event ended with the spiritual hymn “God, the Great One…”. The event took place to the musical accompaniment of the Municipal Choir “Homin”. An honor guard was also on duty during the ceremony.

We will remind you that the “Honourary Sign of St. Yuri” is a city award of Lviv awarded for outstanding services to the city. The badge is depicted in the form of a cross, in which is inscribed a circle with the image of St. George – the patron of the city of Lviv.
