Lviv to host events marking the Remembrance Day for the victims of the Olenivka terrorist attack

On 29 July, a number of events are planned in Lviv to mark the Remembrance Day for the victims of the terrorist attack in Olenivka. City residents are urged to join the joint prayer, requiem and evening remembrance event to honour the Ukrainian servicemen who were killed as a result of the Russian terrorist attack on the colony in Olenivka, as well as all defenders who died in captivity.

The attack itself took place at the Olenivka colony four years ago. At that time, according to available data, at least 50 Ukrainian Defenders were killed, more than 130 were injured, around 70 of them seriously. More than 90 defenders of Mariupol who survived the explosion at the colony are still being held in Russian captivity.

Over the course of the day, the following memorial events will take place in Lviv:

  • 10:00 – a memorial service for those killed in the Olenivka attack and for all Ukrainian servicemen who died in captivity. Venue: Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, 11 Teatralna St.
  • 18:00 – a requiem in memory of those killed in the Olenivka attack and of Ukrainian soldiers who died in captivity. Location: Memorial Museum of Totalitarian Regimes “Territory of Terror”, 45H Vyacheslav Chornovil Ave.

The evening requiem programme includes a short memorial service at the entrance to the museum, speeches by former prisoners, servicemen, relatives of prisoners and public figures. There will also be musical and poetry performances dedicated to the memory of the fallen defenders, as well as recollections from eyewitnesses and the families of servicemen. Afterwards, participants will proceed to Barrack No. 2, where a poem will be recited, candles will be lit and a joint prayer will be offered for all servicemen and civilians who died in Russian torture chambers.

At 20:00, on the square in front of the Taras Shevchenko monument on Svobody Avenue, Lviv residents will light candles by the portraits of the fallen soldiers, paying tribute to their memory.

The memorial events are organised by the public organisation “Remember Ukraine”.
