Tragic news has reached the Sokal community in Lviv region. DNA examination has confirmed the death of Ukrainian defender Oleh Bohdanovych Vasyliashko, who had been considered missing since 2022.
Oleh Vasyliashko was born on August 12, 1975, in the village of Zavyshen. He studied at the Zhvyrka school. He underwent military training in the town of Haisyn, Vinnytsia region, and completed his compulsory military service in Lutsk.
In March 2022, at the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion, he joined the ranks of Ukraine’s defenders. The serviceman held the position of commander of a grenade launcher squad in the grenade launcher platoon of the fire support company of the motorized infantry battalion of military unit A0998. He held the rank of junior sergeant.
What is known about the circumstances of his disappearance and return
- Oleh Vasyliashko began defending Ukraine in March 2022.
- On June 25, 2022, during a combat clash near Vovchoiarivka, communication and visual contact with him were lost.
- Since then, the serviceman had officially been considered missing.
- His death was confirmed by DNA examination.
- On May 3, 2026, the family received notification that Oleh Vasyliashko was returning home “on the shield.”
The community remembers Oleh Vasyliashko as a brave, strong, and devoted warrior. His loss is a deep sorrow for his family, fellow villagers, and all of Ukraine.
The Sokal City Council expressed sincere condolences to the Hero’s daughters, Khrystyna and Ruslana, as well as to his brothers Andrii and Roman and their families. Sadly, Oleh Vasyliashko’s parents did not live to see their son return home, as they passed away during the past year.
The Hero will be met tomorrow, May 6, at 2:30 p.m. near the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Sokal. After that, the funeral procession will proceed to the village of Zavyshen, to the defender’s family home. There, the memorial service and burial rite will begin.
Junior Sergeant Oleh Vasyliashko will be buried on May 6 at the local cemetery in Zavyshen.
