On Defenders of Ukraine Day, a renovated children’s playground was opened on Lvivska Street in Zhovkva, dedicated to the fallen defender Oleksandr Tkachenko. The soldier, a native of Zhovkva, was killed on 19 March 2022 in Popasna, Luhansk region, during the war with Russia. He was 23 years old at the time of his death.
The playground was arranged precisely in the place where Oleksandr spent his childhood. According to his mother, Mrs Tetiana Shtonda, her son often came here, as their home is located on the neighbouring street.
“Sashko often ran here when he was little, because our house is nearby, on the neighbouring street. He will be a heavenly Angel for all these children…” — Tetiana Shtonda
The fallen soldier’s mother initiated the renovation of the playground and funded the purchase of new play equipment and the landscaping of the area. The Zhovkva City Council provided for the construction of paths, lighting and fencing, and carried out the necessary improvement works. Local entrepreneurs also joined in the implementation of the project.
The renewed children’s space is intended to bring joy to children and at the same time serve as a reminder of the feat of Oleksandr Tkachenko, who gave his life defending Ukraine.
