The Drohobych community has suffered a painful loss. Recently, a brave soldier, 25-year-old Drohobych resident Oleh Gilzhynskyi, was killed while defending Ukraine from the enemy.
From the first days of the full-scale invasion, Oleg quit his job as an engineer and stood up to defend Ukraine in the ranks of the TRO. He participated in the battles for the liberation of Kyiv region. Later, he joined the 47th Magura Brigade.
Oleh was the first “master gunner” – a gunner-operator of the Bradley fighting vehicle, who knew the capabilities of military equipment perfectly and skilfully used them to destroy the enemy. It was he who checked and prepared the combat vehicles for deployment. During combat missions in the hottest spots, the Drohobych resident showed special bravery, humanity and engineering talent.
He took part in the liberation of Robotino. He held Stepove with his comrades. Even in the fog and bad weather, Oleh went out and performed every combat task perfectly. He did his best to support and cover the guys, to take out the wounded.
“He pulled a lot of people out of the very hell,” recalls Oleh’s fiancée Kateryna, who served with him in the same brigade.
He defended Ukraine to his last breath, never leaving his comrades-in-arms without support, saving both people and animals – he had a very sensitive and sincere heart.
The warrior was killed on 27 February while performing a combat mission and evacuating a wounded comrade-in-arms near the town of Berdychi, Donetsk region.
The deceased Hero is survived by his mother, fiancée Kateryna, grandmother and grandfather.
The meeting of the funeral convoy with the body of the defender will take place on Monday, 4 March, at 11:00 a.m. at the Heroes’ Crossing. At 11:30 a citywide farewell will be held on Rynok Square.
The funeral service will take place at 12:00 in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The fallen defender will be buried on the Walk of Fame.
