Fallen Defender Vasyl Bohol to Be Buried in Lviv Amid Dispute over Burial Site in Sokal

A public debate has emerged in Chervonohrad District, Lviv Region, regarding the burial site of fallen Ukrainian soldier Vasyl Bohol. Due to the widespread discussions online, the situation is being presented with input from both family members and local authorities.

Family’s Position

Roman Ben, Vasyl’s cousin and the person listed as his official representative in military documents, posted an emotional statement on social media. He claimed that Sokal authorities refused to bury Vasyl in the local Alley of Glory due to his lack of local registration and financial concerns. Roman, currently held in pre-trial detention in Lviv, insisted on Sokal as the burial site so he could visit his brother’s grave in the future.

Sokal City Council’s Response

Sokal City Council denied the claims. In an official letter dated February 3 (№424/1), they confirmed their readiness to carry out the burial at the Alley of Glory in Sokal.

However, as Vasyl was legally registered in Lviv and his closest relatives reside there, the council proposed the option of burial in Lviv — closer to the family. Authorities emphasized that this was a recommendation made in the family’s interest, not a refusal to honor the fallen defender.

Final Resting Place of the Hero

On February 5, Vasyl Bohol will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Field of Honor at Lviv’s Holoskivske Cemetery.

Glory to the Hero of Ukraine. May his eternal peace rise above all disputes.
