Defenders who had September birthdays: the community remembers fallen Heroes

In September, the community honours the memory of the servicemen who were killed at the front and who would have been celebrating their birthdays this month. These are defenders from the settlement of Ivano-Frankove, the villages of Vorotsiv and Birky, as well as a Lviv resident, who gave their lives for Ukraine’s freedom and independence.

Stepan Horonyi was born and raised in the settlement of Ivano-Frankove. He did his compulsory military service in the special battalion “Honour Guard”, and in 2015 he took part in the Anti-Terrorist Operation three times. After the start of the full-scale invasion, on 26 February 2022, he voluntarily took up arms to defend Ukraine. He was killed on 9 September 2022 in fighting in Kherson region. He would have turned 36 on 22 September.

Dmytro Ilchyshyn was an anti-aircraft gunner with the 60th Separate Mechanised Inhulets Brigade and lived in the settlement of Ivano-Frankove. He was killed on 24 September 2023 in Donetsk region, in the area of Chasiv Yar, while carrying out a combat mission and holding back the enemy’s advance. This September marks the third anniversary of his death.

Andrii Buina, call sign “Smiley”, served as a Category I border service inspector, senior scout of Group I of the ground reconnaissance unit of the reconnaissance section of the rapid response border commandant’s office, and held the rank of chief sergeant. He was killed on 29 January 2023 while carrying out a combat mission in Donetsk region. On 1 September Andrii would have turned 30. He is buried in the settlement of Ivano-Frankove.

Oleksandr Siusiailo was a resident of the settlement of Ivano-Frankove and a senior gunner of a self-propelled artillery battalion of military unit A4123. Since 2020 he had been serving under contract. He was killed on 16 December 2025 while carrying out a combat mission near the village of Tyche in Dnipropetrovsk region. He would have turned 26 in September. He is buried in the settlement of Ivano-Frankove.

Andrii Soluk, a native of the village of Vorotsiv, served in the 11th Separate Rifle Battalion of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was killed on 5 July 2024 near the village of Yevhenivka in Pokrovsk district while carrying out a combat mission to defend Ukraine. He would have turned 40 in September. The soldier was laid to rest in his home village of Vorotsiv.

Petro Holiaka was born in the village of Birky. In 2025 he took up arms to defend Ukraine from the Russian invasion. He defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state in the Kursk sector as part of the 80th Separate Air Assault Halychyna Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was killed on 27 March 2025 and for a long time was considered missing in action in the area of the village of Hoholivka in Russia’s Kursk region. He would have turned 39 in September. He is buried in the village of Birky.

Oleh Nohach was a Lviv resident. In 2024 he took up arms to defend the Motherland from the Russian invasion and fought in the Donetsk sector as part of the 100th Separate Mechanised Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He would have turned 52 in September. The defender was laid to rest in the village of Birky.

The community, with gratitude and sorrow, remembers each of these warriors who gave their lives for Ukraine, and calls on everyone to cherish their memory in prayer and in everyday deeds.
